Prelude Conference on One Nation, One Election (October 17, 2024)

The Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), J&K Regional Branch organized a significant prelude conference on the theme "One Nation One Election," featuring a keynote address by Prof. Suresh Misra, Chair Professor at IIPA, New Delhi. Prof. Misra discussed the concept of simultaneous elections, referencing international examples and the origins of the proposal, which was initiated by former President Sh. Pranab Mukherjee in 2017. He highlighted the potential benefits of the reform, such as reduced expenditure, continuity in governance, and a single voter list, while also acknowledging challenges like the overshadowing of regional issues. Sh. B.R. Sharma, IAS (Retd), Chairman of IIPA J&K RB, and Shri Kuldeep Khoda, IPS (Retd), former DGP of J&K Police, also addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of informed citizen participation, consensus-building, and electoral security. The conference saw insightful discussions on the impact of electoral reforms, with Sh. B.R. Sharma emphasizing the role of democracy in fostering accountability, and Shri Kuldeep Khoda highlighting the need for a coordinated approach to managing elections. He also urged Page 2 of 2 citizens to use social media responsibly to strengthen the democratic process. The event was attended by officials from the State Election Commission, media representatives, and students, with Prof. Alka Sharma, Honorary Secretary of IIPA, presenting the formal vote of thanks. The proceedings were conducted by Prof. Anil Gupta, Joint Secretary of IIPA J&K RB.
