Lecture on China, An Overview

Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), J&K Regional Branch in collaboration with Department of National Security Studies, Central University of Jammu supported by Ananta Centre, New Delhi organized a lecture on “China, An Overview” by Lt. Gen. S.L.Narasimhan, PVSM, VSM Phd (Retd) Member, National Security Advisory Board, Govt of India. Lt. Gen. S.L.Narasimhan discussed about five broader themes- China’s international relations, India-China relations, China’s economy, internal situation in China and military transformation. He discussed in detail the various perspectives of China’s relations with major power. He pointed out that, “for last 20-30 years Western powers appeased China so that it will help world economy to grow, but lately it turns out to be disruptive.” He also mentioned one unique thing about China that “the more you read about China, the more you feel illiterate about China.” On One Belt One Road (OBOR) issue, he elaborated that, “it is a unilateral project, which lacks transparency and is meant to cater the China’s surplus capacity. Also the funding of the project is not financially viable.” He also pointed out that the issue of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) the extension of OBOR project is central to Indian concerns as it passes through Gilgit-Baltistan region of J&K. Rahul Jalali, Chairman, Confederation of Press Clubs in India moderated a very lively discussion ranging from dealing with China’s expansion as a chance for India to increase its prowess in international arena to the military power of China. Prof Ashok Aima, Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Jammu, in his Presidential remarks argued that the role of China is imperative to the world and a sought of cooperation with China should be explored. Earlier Sameer Rekhi, Hony Secretary of IIPA, J&K Regional Branch welcomed the guest speaker and introduced the guest speaker and the subject. He gave a brief introduction about China and its future roles. Dr. J. Jaganaathan Assistant Professor ably organised and conducted the program. Prof. Brijmohan Bhau, Head, Department of National Security Studies Central University of Jammu presented a vote of thanks. The lecture was attended by senior police officers, Officer Trainees from SKPA, Udhampur eminent citizens of state including members of IIPA, media fraternity, faculty and students of University of Jammu, Central University of Jammu and Indian Institute of Mass Communication and civil society.
