Lecture on “Roadmap for Jammu Smart City”.

Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) J&K Regional Branch was organized a
lecture on “Roadmap for Jammu Smart City” on July 7, 2018, which was attended by IIPA
members, officers of JMC, JDA, Town Planning Organization, PWD, PHE and other
departments. Sh. Ramesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner Jammu was the key resource
person and Shri Sanjeev Verma, Divisional Commissioner Jammu was the Chief Guest. Dr.
Ashok Bhan, Patron, IIPA presided over the function.
Sh Ramesh Kumar in his lecture highlighted the role of urbanization in the holistic
development of the country and to focus on this development, he emphasized the need to
take care of unplanned growth. While sharing his comments, he mentioned the role of
citizen engagement in developing Jammu as the Heritage city. He also mentioned about the
specific action plans being developed for the development of old city area in Jammu and
some initiatives being undertaken for the city as a whole. He also mentioned about some
bottlenecks in carrying forward these plans on which the work is already in progress.
Shri Sanjeev Verma in his address highlighted the various aspects of a smart city. While
deliberating some steps specifically with regards to Jammu, he pointed out a number of
initiatives as a part of Smart City project. He also suggested that regular meetings with
regards to the progress in Smart city project be conducted.
Dr. Ashok Bhan in his presidential remarks expressed his happiness over Jammu being
identified as a smart city . In his presentation Dr. Bhan suggested a development model for
Jammu with a focus on retrofitting, Redevelopment, Greenfields and Pancity development.
He emphasized on achieving success with inclusivity and sustainability.
Earlier, Sh. Vinod Malhotra gave a background to Jammu as a Smart city. He also
highlighted the broad features of various centrally sponsored schemes introduced by Central
Government from time to time for integrated development of urban areas. Prof. Alka
Sharma, Director Seminars presented a formal welcome address and conducted the
proceedings and Honorary Secretary, IIPA Sh. J B S Johar presented the formal vote of
thanks.
